Belleville

In this lesson you’ll learn to play “Belleville” – a fast and energetic tune composed by Django Reinhardt. This piece is based on a classic AABA form and shows Django’s characteristic blend of drive, elegance and melodic creativity.

I’ve chosen this piece because it’s a classic example of gypsy swing – exciting to play, rhythmically challenging, and full of opportunities to develop your phrasing and picking technique. We’ll start by breaking down the melody and learning how to phrase it authentically.
Then we’ll dive into a solo transcription based on parts of the version I played with my trio on YouTube. The solo has some great lines that you can use in other tunes – it’s a great workout for your right hand and will help you get more comfortable navigating fast tempos with clarity and precision.
