Traditional Blues

In this lesson, we’re working with a C blues, but not in a strictly basic form. The progression already leans toward a more traditional gypsy jazz approach, with a few harmonic details that give it a more refined sound.

You’ll notice elements like the IV–iv movement (F to Fm6), diminished passing chords, and a II–V–I turnaround. These are all very typical in this style and worth paying attention to, as they come up in many tunes.

The lesson includes transcriptions for different levels. Even if you’re just getting started with blues, you can focus on the simpler ideas and build from there. More advanced players can use this as a way to expand their vocabulary and phrasing.

Take your time with the form and really listen to how the harmony moves — that’s where most of the musical information is.
